T. John Group of Institutions
The Department of Management, T.John Group of
Institutions conducted a one day symposium on “The Indian
Retail Challenge” as a part of the intercollegiate fest
“Chariot 08” on 21st February 2008 at the Town Hall.
The symposium was inaugurated by Prof. P.G.Apte, Former Director,
IIM Bangalore in the illustrious presence of Dr. Thomas.P.J.,
Chairman, T.John Group of Institutions, Campus Director, Wing
Commander (Rtd.) D.A.K.Yohan, Dr.Seema, Principal, T.John College,
Prof. Sukumar Naik, Principal, TIMS and Dr.Hanumantha Gowda, Principal,
T.John Institute of Technology.
Dr. Seema Goel, Principal, T.John College, during the welcome
address emphasized that the T.John College insists on total competency
value development. Further she stated that in today’s scenario,
business, management and economics are constantly varying and
therefore never like before there is a steady interface between
the industry and academics. Prof. Sukumar Naik, Principal, TIMS
stressed on the need to acquire knowledge since we inhabit in
the thoroughly knowledge based economy. He also shared his views
on the retail industry scenario in India, in particular and across
the globe in general. Dr.Hanumantha Gowda, Principal, T.John Institute
of Technology during his address highlighted the fact that summation
of effective planning, time management and implementation of the
plans with perseverance and total commitment would enable an individual
to achieve his goals. Also he stated that symposiums of such stature
would facilitate the future managers to view management process
with a different perspective.
Campus Director, Wing Commander (Rtd.) D.A.K.Yohan presented an
inspiring address on the significance of management courses and
the need to stand tall in the crowd by imbibing the imperative
skills such as leadership qualities, managerial skills, crisis
management, decision making ability to pool resources etc.. He
supplemented his address by affirming that the destiny of a country
is decided by the students of management studies. Dr. Thomas.P.J.,
Chairman, T.John Group of Institutions recounted the contribution
of Prof. Apte to the Indian Management scenario. He also insisted
the management students should consider it a boon, for the Indian
retail industry is booming at a phenomenal pace. He called the
management students to be a privileged class because they are
a part of the nation building process and that every student should
strive to be an entrepreneur to spearhead the economy of the nation.
Prof. P.G.Apte, Former Director, IIM Bangalore during his keynote
address emphasized on the need to transform information into a
useful retailing knowledge. He also called the attention of the
delegates to resolve the conflict between the traditional retail
industry and the upcoming supermarket giants like Wal-Mart and
Reliance. He further shared his opinion that retail chain can
be constructed without job destruction. During his address he
also highlighted the fact that technological growth is so rapid
that the managers should reorient themselves with this augmentation
in order to enable their customers to reap the best of the techno
harvest. Prof. Mareena Mathews, Director, Management Studies proposed
the vote of thanks.
