SYMPOSIUM - BIOVATION 08
INAUGURATION

The Department of Biosciences, T.John Group of
Institutions organized a one day symposium on “Bioethics,
Biosafety and IPR” as a part of the Intercollegiate fest
“Biovation 08” on 20th February 2008 at the Town Hall.
The symposium was inaugurated by Dr. Nandhini Kumar, Deputy Director
General, ICMR, New Delhi inaugurated the symposium in the august
presence of Dr. Thomas P.J., Chairman, T.John Group of Institutions,
Campus Director Wing Commander (Rtd) D.A.K.Yohan, Dr. Seema Goel,
Principal, T.John College and Prof. Sukumar Naik, Principal, TIMS.
Dr. Seema Goel, during her welcome address stated that biotechnology
is one field which will fundamentally transform human beings and
that it should be achieved only through a code of ethics with
a sense of dignity. She further stressed that bioethics is the
need of the hour and therefore it should not be overestimated
or undervalued.
Dr. Thomas P.J. during his inspiring address emphasized the need
for the youngsters to tread in a new path in the field of medical
research and bioethics. He also highlighted that India is leaping
ahead with the fastest moving economy and with the largest pool
of intelligence. He further stated that the younger generation
of today is in an envious position gaining immense knowledge through
various sources.
The key note address was delivered by Dr. Nandhini Kumar, Deputy
Director General, ICMR, New Delhi. During her thought provoking
speech she related the significance of Bioethics in today’s
scenario. Further she insisted on the need to follow ICMR guidelines
while conducting medical research. She asserted that informed
consent is mandatory during any such medical procedures.
