One Day Symposium at School of Graduate Studies, Jain University

The I and V semester students of BA JEP, T. John College attended a one day Symposium at School of Graduate Studies, Jain University on 19th of August 2017. The speakers for the day were Prof. N. Manu Chakravarthy, National Award winning film critic and Sahitya Academy awardee, Dr. Nataraj Huliyar, cultural critic, and Sahitya Academy Awardee and Sri. Vivek Shanbhag, renowned novelist and playwright.

The symposium focused on reading the works of Dr.U.R. Ananthmurthy as a Socio-Cultural critic whose novels reflected the tumultuous society of India. Prof.N.Manu Chakravarthy discussed about the aspects of hegemony, culture and re-reading of culture through the lens of the works of Prof.U.R.Ananthmurthy. This was followed by a talk by Dr.Natraj Huliyar, cultural Critic and Sahitya Academy awardee who enlightened the audience on the interpretations offered to the works of Dr.U.R.Ananthamurthy.

In the afternoon session, an edited documentary of Dr.U.R.Ananthamurhy was screened followed by Prof.N.Manu Chakravarthy and Sr.Vivek Shanbhag discussed  the literary landscape of Karnataka with a special focus on Dr.U.R.Ananthamurthy’s literature, Navya movement and modernity in Kannada literature. The symposium ended with a speech by Dr.Sharath Ananthamurthy. Overall, the symposium helped the students in identifying and understanding the changing patterns in Indian literature in English.
