Social Activities Week
The ‘Humanities Club’ of the Dept. of Languages of T. John College organized a Social Activity Week from August 2-5, 2011. Through the week BA students went on rounds to all classrooms and staff rooms and collected clothes, shoes, unused blank paper, bags and stationery from students as well as staff. The items collected were then given to an NGO, ‘FSL – India’ to help in their ‘Tent School Project’.
In the area of Kundapur, on the west coast of Karnataka (South India) near Mangalore, FSL is supporting several schools which are very poor and do not have enough resources to provide an appropriate education to the children. FSL India has here started ‘Tent School Project’, the tent people are migrants from neighbour states and north part of Karnataka for temporary period. They work in building construction, fishing etc. Since they migrate from place to place, their children do not get the chance to go to schools and either resort to working along with their parents or begging. FSL has started a project to provide these kids basic education and support them and their family.
On August 5, Oscar winning movie ‘The King’s Speech’ was screened in the BHM Seminar Hall. The ticket for the movie was priced at Rs.30/head. Rs.4650 was collected through the sale of movie tickets and the amount was given to FSL India to support their ‘Tent School Project’.
The Humanities Club would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to all the staff and students of T. John College for their support and encouragement to make this event a success.
