NSS Eye Care Camp
NSS is National Service Scheme, sponsered by Govt of India, Ministry of Human Resources, to promote leadership qualities and inculcate social belongingness to society by the student population. NSS unit of T.John College, with a huge strength of committed staff and student volunteers, took an oath to serve people of Subashnagar village adjuscent to Begur in Bangalore. The population of the village is made up of - daily labours, hawkers and economically weaker sections of Society.
Narayana Netralaya is one of the renowned Eye Hospitals Located in Bangalore. They have outstanding social commitment of serving the society and has a strong expertise in conducting eye check-ups and surgeries. It is a regular practice for the organisation to offer free service and surgeries to poor and needy. The simplicity of the staff and professional approach of the hospital is an evidence to prove this point. They are in association with District Blindness Control Society a govt initiative to eliminate blindness of the population, comes as a real boost in their great service, and they are able to offer service and surgeries free of cost for the poor and needy. Hence we requested Narayana Netralaya to offer their services in our eye camp at Subashnagar.
The average cost of optical power glasses can be around Rs. 600 to Rs.1500.00. Even with many constrint, Narayana Netralaya has been kind enough to supply optical power glasses,irrespective of the actual cost of manufacturing at a very nominal price of just Rs.200.00.
300 villagers were examined, 57 people were adviced surgery and 150 people were adviced optical power glasses. 20 of them, who were adviced surgery immediately decided to go for admission at the Hospital and undergo eye surgery. They will be operated and given free post operative care at the Hospital from November 18, 2011 onwards. The event of eye care camp at Subashnagar on November 17, 2011, organised by T.John college NSS Unit is unique and a feather in their cap.
There are many doners who have come forward to donate optical glasses as a gesture and service for this noble cause. We are in touch with them and we are confident to provide power glasses to the needy latest by the end of this month.
