INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY, MYSORE UNIVERSITY



40 students and three faculty of Biosciences Department paid a visit to the Department of Zoology, Mysore University on Tuesday, 9 March 2010.

The students were taken on this visit to see the Drosophila Stock Center, a one-of-its-kind facility in Mysore University. Drosophila or common fruit fly is a model organism in genetics. The Stock Center at Mysore University maintains over 2000 mutants and 50 species of this organism. These are supplied free of cost to any interested person who is conducting research on this organism. T.John College also obtains mutants required by students of B.Sc. BT course from this center.

The students were very interested to see this premier facility. The staff of the center were very informative and gave the students an overview of the importance of Drosophila in genetics. Students also observed various mutants under Stereomicroscope. Besides, the students also visited the Departmental museum.

On the return journey, students paid a visit to the world-famous Mysore Palace and the Cauvery Sangam.
