‘Women’s Cell’, APHRODITE of T. John College celebrated 100th International Women’s Day on March 8, 2011.

The day started with an address from the chief guest Ms. Sheela Ramanathan, Director of Human Rights Law Network. She has worked in this field to make people aware of their rights and provide legal aid to the marginalised sections of the society such as women, children, dalits and other minorities, HIV positive people and those with disability. Ms. Sheela spoke about various issues women face in day to day life. She encouraged the audience to go ahead and fight for their rights as a woman. She also asked the women to learn to negotiate to live in the society.

The address was followed by a brief question and answer round.

The next event for the day was ‘Poster Competition’ on the theme ‘Two sides of a woman’. Manu Philip of II semester BCA won the first prize and Umanga Nathali Galahitiyawa of II semester FAD won the second prize for this competition.

In the second half of the day various departments of T. John College did presentations on various topics pertaining to women.

Biosciences Dept. got the prize for making the best presentation.
